Plato was against art, do you agree with him? Why or why not? (5 points)?
Here’s what I understood from Plato’s Republic about his views on art:

    Plato was against art because:

    1) Art is an imitation

Plato believed in two worlds: the physical world (the world we live in) and the world of Forms (a world beyond ours)

The physical world is not the real world because we use our senses to understand it which can give us false information about the truth
The world of Forms is the real world and holds the truth about everything The forms in the world of forms are perfect

Therefore, the physical world is a poor copy of the world of Forms

Plato believed that art imitates physical things (painting of a table imitates the table The table is the physical thing) Physical things imitate the Forms (the table imitates the form of the table The form of the table is the most perfect table)
So art is a copy of a copy which is even further away from truth and towards illusion

    2) Art is powerful, therefore it is dangerous

Plato believed that art can affect people’s emotions Art can influence their behavior and even their character As mentioned, art is a copy of the truth, which can give people false information about the truth. (A person who reads about an ad on a magazine, the ad is not honest because it wants to sell The person would buy the product that was on the add and later on discover that the product is not working)

Do you agree with his theories and what is YOUR worldview about art?

Two points, first, The Republic was offered as a basis for discussion and an exploration of general principles not as blueprint to be followed exactly, if you study his work overall Plato offered guidance in the training of the mind, his concern was that his students be able reason accurately and for themselves, he was not telling people what to think, he’d probably have been horrified at the idea. Second, Plato was addressing the art of Greece in his own day, not of art in general world wide, there is nothing to suggest that he wouldn’t have approved, even enjoyed, art that reflected the world in a way that he saw as truthful. Given that anything of power can be used for good or ill it is a valid interpretation of his work that art, being powerful, should be used for the good of society in the same way as might be a military under other circumstances.

Do you agree with Jerry Jarrett?
Jerry Jarrett, one of the founders of TNA Wrestling, posted the following comments on his Facebook page today regarding TNA’s new partnership with Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff:

The hot news currently is all about Hulk Hogan and Eric Bishoff signing with TNA. I sincerely wish them well and from the one comment I read, Hulk might be able to bring a positive shift to the company. Hulk stated that he wants to help the new talent learn and appreciate the “Art of Professional Wrestling”. If he is allowed to do this, the product will greatly improve and it will be positive for the business.

The “Art of Professional Wrestling” has been lost recently and I place the blame squarly on the shoulders of the promoters of the business. Wrestling talent currently is over-produced to the point that most wrestlers are reduced to trying to be actors, (which most are not) by giving scripted interviews and robotic matches. To make matters worse, the scripts are written by producers who don’t have a clue what professional wrestling is all about.

In about five years the business changed and in my opinion for the worst. I discovered in 2002, when we started TNA, that the heart of the business had been removed and all that remained was the illusion of professional wrestling. I walked in the building in Huntsville, Ala. to find the ring filled with wrestlers rehearsing every move that they planned to make during their match. I watched as wrestlers sat reading and memorizing interviews. I was dumbfounded when I discovered that basic principals of the business were alien to the new wrestlers. I felt that I was talking in a foreign language. What is heat? What is a ring general? What is selling? What do you mean when you say listen to the fans?

I was told after I broke into this business that it was our duty to teach the new talent the “Art of Professional Wrestling”.I was told when we began TNA that the business had changed and it was not possible to go back to that art form. I have my personal excuses for not going in that direction, but I regret not trying and this is why I truly hope Terry can do what I could not do.

The business today has truly changed. The new wrestlers are taught in “training camps”, or wrestling schools. It seems to me that if you put twenty wrestlers in a school and one man teaches them all, they would tend to be somewhat clones of each other. Wrestlers should be taught the business by other wrestlers in live situations. A student who goes to a wrestling school will learn everything he is going to lean at the school in 90 days. He will never advance until he learns from veteran wrestlers in live match situations. Far too much emphases is placed on in ring work anyway. I think this is the result of wrestling websites, written by people who have never had a match, telling wrestlers that they have a 5 star match or a 2 star match. I’d guess that Hulk Hogan has never been given one 5 star match rating in his career. I’d also bet that he had drawn more money in the wrestling business than all the 5 star rated wrestles combined.

Superstars of the wrestling business become Superstars because of their personalities and not because of their in-ring wrestling abliity. Verbal skills are much more important that physical skills when it comes to drawing money in this business. You don’t develop verbal skills in a talent by writing a script and allowing the talent to read his lines. How can a writer of these interview scripts not produce clone interviews? The unique personalities of wrestlers are hidden and only the thoughts of this one writer are expressed.

The uniqueness of professional wrestling and it’s great public appeal is based on the interaction of personalities of the talent. To not understand this concept is to fail. If you take a walk in your memory and remember the great stars of professional wrestling, you will find that you best remember the personality and not the matches of these stars.

So Terry, good luck in your efforts. You have a big job in front of you.

    Jerry

I love what Jerry said about Hogan. Hogan never had a 5 star match, but he drew more money than any guy whos ever had a 5 star match. So true.
Red = Not everyone can be bald and beautiful like me =)

    1. ALL HAIL HARDY KING OF YOUTUBE!!!

I read this article online too, and have to admit it seems like a lot of truth to it, especially about the interview scripts and the clone interviews. It does seem that in today’s wrestling we do not see much unique personalities at all, if ever.

His comments about the verbal skills being more important than the physical skill when it comes to drawing money has some ring of truth to. Most of the top stars have great verbal skills, and are wonderful on the mic, and really showed their great personalities, like the Rock and Austin, and many others. Even though these stars was good in the ring, I don’t think they would of been as over if they didn’t have the mic skills.

Plus what Jerry had to say about Hogan is true, he is the biggest star of all time in wrestling, even though critics say he has never had a 5 star match, he has sold out so many arenas.

All in all, Jerry has a good point of view on this subject, and I think maybe, Hogan might actually be able to help TNA, if he helps the younger talent, and maybe shows the stars how to get their personalities over.

    Accounting questions not sure of.?
    1. During the current year, York Equipment Stores had net sales of $950 million, a cost of goods sold of $420 million, average accounts receivable of $90 million, and average inventory of $60 million.
York Equipment’s inventory turnover rate is: 9 times, 7 times, 6 times or some other amount.
    2. Which of the following practices best illustrates efficient management of cash?
Cash budgets (forecasts) are prepared only one month in advance in order to avoid the need for constant revision.
Management arranges for a loan to cover projected cash shortages during the production phase of the business cycle each year.
All cash resources are held in the checking account to maximize liquidity.
The accountant records all cash receipts and payments when reconciling the bank account at the end of each month.
    3. If sales are $165,000, expenses are $105,000 and dividends are $15,000, Income Summary:
Will have a credit balance of $45,000.

Will have a credit balance of $60,000.

Will have a debit balance of $45,000.

Will have a debit balance of $60,000.
    4. The normal order in which the financial statements are prepared is:

Income tax return, income statement, balance sheet.

5.At year-end, the perpetual inventory records of Anderson Co. indicate 65 units of a particular product in inventory, acquired at the following dates and unit costs:
Purchased in August: 31 units at $770 per unit
Purchased in November: 34 units at $600 per unit
However, a complete physical inventory taken at year-end indicates only 50 units of this product actually are on hand.
Under the LIFO flow assumption, the cost of this item to be included as inventory in the company’s year-end balance sheet is:

    $33,230.

    $39,000.

    $35,270.

    Some other amount.
    6. If current assets are $75,000 and current liabilities are $45,000, the current ratio will be (rounded):
    $120,000

    1.7:1.

    60%.

    $30,000.
7.At December 31, before adjusting and closing the accounts had occurred, the Allowance for Doubtful Accounts of Seaboard Corporation showed a debit balance of $4,000. An aging of the accounts receivable indicated the amount probably uncollectible to be $2,800. Under these circumstances, a year-end adjusting entry for uncollectible accounts expense would include a:
Credit to the Allowance for Doubtful Accounts for $1,200.

Debit to Uncollectible Accounts Expense 6,800.

Debit to Uncollectible Accounts Expense 2,800.

Debit to Allowance for Doubtful Accounts 1,200.

    8. After preparing a bank reconciliation, a journal entry would be required for which of the following:

A check for $44 given to a supplier but not yet recorded by the company’s bank.

    11. Melody Land uses a perpetual inventory system and records purchases of merchandise at net cost. The company recently purchased 150 compact discs at an invoice price of $4,700 and terms of 2/10, n/30. Half of these discs had been mislabeled and were returned immediately to the supplier. The journal entry to record payment of this invoice after the discount period has expired will include a:
    Credit to Cash for $2,350.

Debit to an expense account for $47.

    Debit to Inventory for $2,350.

    Credit to Cash for $2,303.

    1. EJ (Philippines)

      Answer:

      1. Seven Times

Inventory Turnover = Cost of Goods Sold / Average Inventory

      2. Management arranges for a loan to cover projected cash shortages during the production phase of the business cycle each year.

It is efficient when you are are able to predict the expected cash needs of the company.

      3. Will have a credit balance of $60,000.

Dividends will only affect the retained earnings (capital) and not the performance of the business itself.

      4. Income statement, statement of retained earnings, balance sheet.

Statement of Retained Earnings couldn’t be prepared without Income Statement and Balance Sheet couldn’t be prepared without Statement of Retained Earnings.

      5.$35,270

LIFO stands for last in, first out. Therefore, what is left in the inventory (unsold units) is the oldest items.

      31 x $770 plus 19 x $600 = $35270.
      31 plus 19 is equal to 50.
The 15 units will be part of shrikage and breakage.

      6. 1.7:1

Current ratio = current assets / current liabilities

7.Debit to Uncollectible Accounts Expense 6,800.

Since the Allowance for Doubtful Accounts has a debit balance of $4000 and the required balance is $2800, Uncollectible Accounts Expense must be $6800 ($4000 + $2800).

      8. Charges for depositing NSF checks.

Adjusting entry that requires recording are transactions affecting cash account that has not been recorded in the books such as bank charges, NSF check, book error and interest income earned.

      9. LIFO

LIFO stands for last in, first out. Therefore, what is left in the inventory are the oldest units (cheaper units).

      10. Food Store

Operating cycle is the period from which the entity purchases inventory, sell it and turns it back into cash.

      11. Debit to an expense account for $47.

Since the company uses the net method and they didn’t take the discount, an expense is, therefore, incurred. Net method assumes that all of the discounts will be taken.

Who owns the copyright to the paintings of artists such as Da Vinci, Monet, van Gogh, Raphael and Rembrandt?
When it comes to art, the UK patent office website says:

“The creator of the work will be the author and first owner and copyright will last for life of the author plus 70 years.

Copyright is, however, a form of intellectual property which, like physical property, can be bought or sold, inherited or otherwise transferred, wholly or in part. So, some or all of the economic rights may subsequently belong to someone other than the first owner.”

For the artists I’ve mentioned and those like them, the 70 year rule has expired but has anyone else taken over the copyright of their works?

I’ve seen numerous prints of paintings by these artists, as well as books, t-shirts, mugs etc that are based on one or more paintings of those I’ve mentioned, all available to buy in various shops and on-line.

Did the people selling these products have to ask for permission to use them commercially or are the works of these artists available to the public to be used by anyone in any way?

They are probably licensed by the museum that holds the original artwork

Can A person survive on the fluctuation of commision and tips as a Cosmotologist and a Esthetician combined?
Hello Everyone. I am a 43 single still woman with two dogs who has tried it all pretty much.. in ways of work. I even attempted to go to College twice with no much luck. I had given Paralegal a wurl too. I am since a little girl a very creative artistic person. My Ultimate extreme goal is to become either a best selling author or.. a painter. I knew this since I was about 10 .. however had no help or support from family. I was an A student and could have gotten scholarships in the arts. Now.. at 43.. I am stuck at a dead end job, working because of gas prices and barely…making ends just meet, with no extra spending money for even clothes. I want to better myself. The media that I hear constantly keeps encouragin nursing. I have a good friend who is a RN and super stressed out over her career. I also read the blogs on all nuses .com and many sadly go into this feel for the security and money and admit to that on the blog. Many are complaining of burn out and injuries. I am not a good person with the elderly and I am not all that compassionate to be honest. I am passionate about art and dogs/animals. I decided.. or.. so.. I thought… to go to an Aveda School for cosmetology that will take me 11 months to complete then go for esthetician which will be an extra 4-5 months. I would then be qualified to do it all.. Hair, nails and skin care. I am just worried that although this would be creative and artistic.. that it would require me to compete with the younger gals who dress trendy and I never have. I also am worried about finances. Although .. they both bring in tips you must get and maintain clients and then eventually you will get a comission of 30-45 percent. I called a Aveda salon and owner said one gal is making 50 grand but.. this must fluctuate with the commisions and tips. I suppose.. I am not use to living on a flexible fluctuating pay scale. I may be able to eventually down the line maintain a liscense to work out of my home to do it that way too.. Aveda for those who are unfamiliar is a Hollistic organic botanicals uses to formualte their product line. I was worried also about aging in that field. Mabe.. I am worrying for nothing or too much. I also.. plan to for sure.. go there after.. to a county college for 8 months to get a certificate in floral design. The woman who teaches the class gets in leads there too. But.. I must do the later first . Cosmetology offers flexibility and you can pencil yourself in. I can then .. do both creative fields. This will enable me to leave my jobs behind when I leave them.. and concentrate on some writing coorespondence school that I plan to take.. and any other on line or off writing and art classes. Now.. that I said all that.. LOL .. I think.. I may be okay. Hey.. if I break into the writing or art area that is my childhood life long dream.. then all else can go away.. if the money follows. By the way.. all above is me and what I love to do. I want to be able to pay the rent, all my bills and car expenses and feed the dogs. I also.. want to not have to worry so.. much and often about money as I have my whole life been very very poor. I dont remeber the last time I bought undies or clothes. If I do.. I go to good will. I also want to be able to have a clear head to pursue my dreams later on. I heard the cosmetology boards are hard to pass. Not sure though. I also love flowers and colors of all sorts. I am not a glamour girl by far. But.. I can learn to dress nice. I never had the money to do so.. or incentive. Any encourgement will be appreciated. Thank You All. Ohh and I just stretched a ligament in my hip and have to have physical therapy before work. Am on light duty. And bag groceries for now. How sad!

    1. Mary M

if you go to an Aveda school they will train you to do facials, nails and waxing! you don’t have to do both. the only thing you wouldn’t be able to do at a salon/spa is massage!
