Do I Use Shared or Dedicated Web Hosting?
By Jason Kay
Web hosting is an important thing to consider for anyone who is developing a website of their own or a company website for their own business. Prior to getting your first website online you will need to make some decisions concerning your web hosting and understanding the difference between the different types of web hosting available to you is vital in making the best decision possible.
Two forms of web hosting are the most popular options on the market today. They are shared and dedicated web hosting. It is important to understand the difference between them in order to make a decision about which type to use for your web site needs. With shared web hosting, your web site is on the same physical server as other web sites. With dedicated web hosting, your web site is the only one on a given server.
Shared hosting is the less expensive of the two options. It is commonly referred to as virtual hosting, as you do not have physical access to the server itself, nor do you need to incur the cost of maintaining the server. This is a great option for someone who is starting out, however it may not always meet your needs in the future. Bandwidth and disk space available with shared hosting is limited. This may mean that if you are lucky enough to have high visitor volume, not all of them would be able to access the site at the same time. Shared hosting also restricts the custom applications that you would be able to use if you had dedicated hosting. With shared hosting the growth of your website is held in check by the allocation of space that you have and the demands of the other websites on the same server.
Dedicated web hosting gives you more freedom in your capacity to accept high traffic volume, more power, greater storage, quicker processing and more freedom to do custom applications that a shared hosting server doesn't allow. In addition, with a dedicated server, there are fewer chances of running into server-related problems. You don't have to worry about limiting your growth or development if you use dedicated web hosting. You can put multiple sites of your own on the same dedicated server or just one and allow it to grow and expand as necessary.
If you have specialized requirements for your server, a dedicated server is the best option for you. If you experience high volume or anticipate high volume in the future, dedicated servers are the way to go. Just be aware that there are additional requirements that you may need to take on, such as providing your own security and your own server administrator.
Web hosting is necessary for each and every web site that is one the World Wide Web. Investigate the web hosting options available to you before making a choice. You may be spending money unnecessarily or you may be stunting the growth of your company if you make the wrong decision. Get your web site up and running with the web hosting service that best meets your needs both now and for the future.
Is shared or dedicated web hosting better for an ecommerce business?
want to know the difference, which is better for my business
I started my ecommerce website on shared hosting and it has worked fine.
You just need to realize that you are sharing it with other websites as well, so there is potential that they could slow down the whole server, therefore impacting on your site’s performance and also their sites could get hacked which could potentially spill over to your site too……. it’s highly unlikely that it is possible.
Dedicated hosting is expensive and can be overkill at first.
What you could do is ask your hosting company whether they can do a Virtualized Server instead with the potential of moving to a dedicated should your site get really busy and is using a lot of server load. Virtual servers are a lot cheaper and they can seperate it from other shared websites so it’s the best of both worlds.
However, if expense is an issue at first if you’re just starting out, put it on a shared hosting account and ask them how easy it to to move it to a virtual or dedicated at a later stage. I’m sure they would be happy to do it for you for FREE as they cost more than a shared hosting environment so it will benefit them more in the long run to move you to virtual or dedicated server.
Hope that helps.

Will my site be okay on shared web hosting, or should I go for dedicated hosting?
I’m going to be starting a speculative fiction web magazine, but I’m unsure whether to use a shared hosting service or a dedicated host.
Dedicated hosting will cost you for a month what shared hosting would cost for an year. Well, of course that is not the way to decide which one to go for.
Usually many people start with shared hosting (even forums and small social networking sites).. and when they find that they have lots of visitors and hence bandwidth requirement, that’s when they move over to semi-dedicated (most people don’t know of this option) or dedicated hosting. It gives you the time to grow your site to the point where the fee you pay for dedicated hosting is really worth it. Usually it might take you anywhere from 8-12 months in doing so unless of course you are already a well known person and the launch of the website you are talking about is anticipated by lots of folks, in which case you’ll have a flood as soon as you start your website.
